Punch in and out calculator
Add your punches for the day — one pair for a normal shift, two pairs for a split shift — and get total hours worked instantly. Overnight shifts that cross midnight are handled automatically, and you can subtract an unpaid lunch instead of punching out for it.
Reading a punch clock correctly
- One pair, lunch deducted: punch 7:00 AM, punch out 3:30 PM, minus 30-minute lunch = 8.0 hours. This is how most tablet time clocks record a day.
- Two pairs (split shift): 7:00–12:00 and 12:30–3:30 = 5.0 + 3.0 = 8.0 hours. Same result, but the lunch is recorded as an actual punch-out.
- Overnight: punch in 10:00 PM, punch out 6:00 AM = 8.0 hours — the calculator rolls past midnight for you.
Rounding: many employers round punches to the nearest 5, 6, or 15 minutes. Under U.S. rules rounding must be neutral — it can't systematically favor the employer. Exact-minute records (like the ones above) avoid the argument entirely.
From punches to paychecks
Total the week and split at 40 hours: everything above 40 in one workweek is overtime at 1.5× for most hourly employees. Use the overtime pay calculator to see the dollars, and the lunch break calculator if your crew clocks one pair per day with a standard lunch deduction.
HoursBooks turns any tablet into a punch clock — workers tap their name, the camera takes a photo, the server stamps the time — and phone clock-in with GPS for field crews. Timesheets and overtime calculate themselves. Free.
